CalJustice Technology Project
The CalJustice Technology Project was established in 1999 to increase access to justice by helping providers capitalize on existing and emerging technologies. The Project is tasked with the coordination and circulation of technology best practices, such as interactive forms tools for self-represented litigants. The Project has primary responsibility for the development and maintenance of a statewide referral website at LawHelpCalifornia.org, which provides information and resources for clients and advocates seeking referral and/or basic rights information. LawHelpCalifornia is the only statewide web site to provide lay consumers with substantive information on nearly every major civil matter and referrals to civil legal assistance in every county in California. In tandem with the Legal Aid Association of California, project staff ensure a seamless web of information at PIC's three web sites: for clients (LawHelpCalifornia.org), advocates (CALegalAdvocates.org) and pro bono attorneys (ProBono.Net/CA).
The Project is led by a strong advisory committee composed of representatives from legal services, private bar, the courts, and State Bar, who are engaged in statewide coordination and have expertise or connections to technology developments statewide. The Advisory Committee is responsible for: guiding PIC’s design, development, and deployment of specific technology projects, including the client site at LawHelpCA.org; tracking new technology developments; evaluating and planning for the use of these technologies to better serve the poverty community; and, identifying sources of funding and supporting funding proposals that seek to sustain statewide technology work.
