"In engaging in public service, law students are awakened to the sense of personal
satisfaction that comes from helping people, a feeling
they are not likely to experience in their other
classes."

--Justice Sandra Day O'Connor

PI/PS DAY

What it is:
Public Interest/Public Sector Legal Careers Day (PI/PS Day) is hosted each February by the Public Interest Clearinghouse and nine Northern California Law Schools: Golden Gate University School of Law, New College of California School of Law, Santa Clara University School of Law, Stanford Law School, University of California Berkeley School of Law, University of California Davis School of Law, University of California Hastings College of the Law, University of San Francisco School of Law, and University of the Pacific McGeorge School of the Law.

The Northern California Consortium of Law Schools' policy requires that employers use Formal Interviews as a formal step in their hiring processes and that informational or optional interviews be reserved for the Meet the Advocates portion of PI/PS Day.

Participating employers at PI/PS Day must have at least one paid, licensed attorney on staff who is willing and able to supervise the students. Additionally, the bulk of the work performed by law students and entry level attorneys must be of a substantive legal nature.

When:
The 25th Annual Northern California Public Interest/Public Sector Legal Careers Day will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Why:
PI/PS Day provides law students an opportunity to meet and interview with public interest and public sector legal organizations.  The event also gives organizations exposure to a large group of people dedicated to public service, a chance to speak with and formally interview a large, diverse group of law students, and a forum for interacting with other public service organizations and government agencies.

PI/PS Day consists of:

1. Formal Interviews: Organizations conduct formal, pre-screened interviews at PI/PS Day for paid, work-study or volunteer positions.  These interviews are open only to students at the nine sponsoring schools.

2. Meet the Advocates: During Meet the Advocates, representatives from various organizations and agencies sit at tables and students circulate and speak with them informally.  Students do not need to make any advance arrangements with individual organizations for these sessions.  Meet the Advocates is an excellent chance to learn about the work done by a large number of organizations and to explore opportunities with them.  Each year, many students attending the MTA sessions are offered interviews after PI/PS Day – and these often result in jobs. MTA is from 9:30am - 1pm.

PIC Statement on Military Recruitment at PI/PS Day

The Public Interest Clearinghouse (PIC) is a proud member of the national and statewide access to justice and civil rights movements.  We are committed to the principle that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people should not be barred from seeking any form of employment, public interest/public sector or otherwise.  One of PIC’s stated organizational values is a commitment to diversity in all its richest forms.  We are proud of PIC’s role in the annual PI/PS Day and the fact that employers are required to certify that they do not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or on any other basis protected by federal, state or local ordinance or regulation.  We are deeply saddened that, out of respect for the potential loss of funding to our Consortium member schools and their University affiliates, we have no other choice but to allow one employer to participate that is unable to sign this certification – the U.S. Military.  PIC staff will be wearing rainbow ribbon stickers throughout PI/PS Day to demonstrate our commitment to diversity, and we encourage students and employers to do the same.   We recognize and value the LGBT movement as a part of the larger civil rights movement, and we look forward to, and believe in, a day when all discrimination will not only be unjust, but also illegal.
