PIC's mission is to increase access to legal help for underserved Californians by building infrastructure and partnerships in the legal community. Hundreds of thousands of low-income Californians turn to California's almost 100 legal services nonprofits to access life’s most basic necessities. PIC engages all segments of the legal community in working to expand the resources available to assist these communities.

PIC accomplishes its mission through three statewide initiatives:
- PRO BONO INITIATIVE: leveraging the resources of the larger legal community by undertaking and supporting pro bono efforts around the state.
- STATEWIDE COORDINATION: supporting the legal services community through strategic planning and serving as a liaison to key stakeholder groups;

California's Catalyst for Justice: Past and Present
PIC was founded in 1979 by a group of law students as an innovative response to an emerging need – students interested in devoting their legal careers to public service needed access to resources and support. For the past thirty years, PIC has served as a catalyst for justice, providing leadership and vital support services to expand access to justice for all Californians. PIC continues to provide innovative responses to emerging needs, whether it is the launch of www.ForeclosureInfoCA.org, statewide strategic coordination of pro bono efforts, or rural serving learning trips for law students to address the unmet needs of Californians living in rural poverty.
